RØDE: Blimp microphone windshield system has been awarded a prestigious Red Dot
The RØDE Blimp has been recognised as a product of the highest design quality by the prestigious international Red Dot awards. An expert panel of 28 judges from around the world assessed over 3,200 products from 49 different countries and identifi ed the Blimp as a creative, innovative and overall outstanding product.
Since its inception in 1955, the distinction of a Red Dot award has been symbolic of the highest standard of product design available. It acknowledges the excellent ergonomics, functionality, longevity, formal quality, durability and innovation of a product. The RØDE Blimp incorporates several design features that make it superior to existing windshield solutions. Its main housing is based on a 10 frequency geodesic dome, with a triangular cross-section that allows the part to be injectionmoulded in one piece. This geometry creates a high open-area ratio that greatly improves the acoustic transparency over existing solutions, yet an unparalleled level of robustness and physical protection for the microphone.
The end-domes can be easily removed by twisting off, allowing easy access to the microphone. An oversize thread facilitates easy and intuitive re-attachment of the domes, avoiding clip systems that are diffi cult to use and vulnerable to breaking.
In addition to its ergonomic features, the Blimp handle hides a unique yet intuitive cable management system with a pre-installed ‘tail’ or patch cable, allowing users to simply connect an XLR lead to the base of the handle. This innovative design minimises any handling noise that may be generated by the cabling. “During the design of the RØDE Blimp we continually focussed on adding tangible performance benefi ts for the user” explained the RØDE Blimp’s Lead Industrial Designer, Matthew Hall. “None of the features unique to the Blimp were incorporated without careful analysis and consideration for their purpose. We took great care to ensure all elements worked cohesively and were integrated into the overall design in a manner to provide the best possible
windshield product on the market today. This consideration been recognised by the Red Dot judging panel, and RØDE is extremely proud to receive this Red Dot award.”
Since its release in late 2008, the RØDE Blimp’s incredible combination of functionality and value has made it one of the most popular shotgun microphone windshields on the market.
The RØDE Blimp will be on display from June 30 to July 26 in the Design On Stage - Winners red dot award: product design 2009 exhibition at the Red Dot design museum in Germany.
